Where are the Projects?

This map shows all of the projects in consideration for the Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP 2050).

This Universe of Projects represents a comprehensive inventory of tangible solutions designed to address the region’s diverse transportation challenges.

It functions as a vision framework guiding transportation planning and investment over the next twenty years, recognizing the evolving nature of regional mobility needs.

Projects included in this inventory are derived from a wide range of sources, including local comprehensive plans, transportation planning studies conducted by relevant state agencies—such as the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT), the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA), and the Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment (OIPI)—as well as analyses of existing conditions and feedback gathered from the public.

Together, these inputs ensure that the Universe of Projects reflects both near and long-term regional priorities. All projects included in the Universe of Projects are evaluated through the 2050 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) Project Inclusion Guidelines. These guidelines ensure that each project considered for inclusion is regionally significant and aligns with the broader goals and priorities of the regional transportation system. As part of this screening process, proposed projects are assessed to confirm that they address transportation needs that extend beyond a single locality and contribute to the overall functionality and connectivity of the regional multimodal network.
